Best Reading App Available

If you are interested in a reading app which has auto-scrolling feature and allows you to convert books from a variety of formats this is the app for you. Conversion is a no-brainer and worka well. Although the developer is somewhat slow to upgrade this reader, it is so fleshed out as to not require much in the way of improvement.

Ain’t What It Used to Be

There was a time, a few years ago, when this was one of the better book apps. That time is, unfortunately, long past. Downloads are a mess, the Bonjour implementation is buggy, files appear, disappear, or lose their “read” status without warning, folders’ contents change as you scroll up and down, the app crashes at the drop of a hat, and you *still* can’t rename files! The sad thing is there aren’t that many good book apps out there that handle large numbers of files well—iBooks’ “collections” are a joke, and the last time I opened GoodReader I nearly nominated it for a Bad UI of the Month award. I may have to give GoodReader another try, as I’ve about had it with Tomes…

Doesnt support two important things

Works perfectly except: Doesnt support calibre server. The desktop server doesnt support UTF16 (Cyrillic in my case) filenames or directories - simply throws and error.

Updated and awesome

Still the most versatile reader for iPhone. Supports pretty much any format you can throw at it. Has a clean interface thats steps out of the way of the book you are reading. Read a book page by page or scroll through the way I prefer. This version corrects a bug with ePub books which moves it back to the top of my list of best book readers.

Very basic

If you are looking for vertical scroll for straight textual reading, this app will be perfect for you. For me I need the vertical scrolling for some technical magazines (epub) that I read constantly. Unfortunately in this app the textual cross references are in a fixed font that is too tiny to read. I searched and searched but I do not see a way to changed the font for anything except the primary text. Also returning from references and footnotes is inaccurate, not returning you to the exact place you left. I totally stopped using this app when I attempted to add a note and the whole app suddenly shut down. Wish I could get my $5 back!

Junk !

Dont WASTE your money on this app. I got it to read chm , mht , and ePub format files on my iPad. It said it did not know the chm file format (even though the app write up says it knows it). It read an ePub but could not turn the pages. And it would not even input the mht file. THIS APP IS TOTALLY FALSE ADVERTISING !!!

Disappointing

Reliably crashes while doing anything other than reading; ShelfServer a flaky pain to install & use; doesnt update TOC or metadata when books are deleted & re-added. Plucker format support, Tomes USP & theoretically most useful feature for those with large legacy collections, also highly unreliable, especially in image handling. Best avoided altogether.

My favorite reading app

Ive tried them all and like this one most. My favorite feature is being able to size the printing by points. This is important on the iPhone screen size -- where I do most of my recreational reading -- when the base print size varies from book to book. The only minor glitch is that the screen shows white when changing pages -- even when the screen is set for orange-on-black to avoid disturbing a sleeping spouse. My "fix" is to press the face against my chest when I change pages.

Update for ISO 7 needs help

I love Tomes, never had even a hint of a problem with it until the latest update. Since then my ipad has completely frozen while using it & needed a reset and now, mid chapter, the app closed & wont open.

Great reader for legacy ebooks

I have used this program for a number of years to read all the legacy ebooks I bought (starting back in 2000 on my palm pilot, blackberry, ... iThing). Mostly these are books from Baen, but there are few others scattered in there. It has a few warts (no cover art until you actually open the book for one), but the most annoying one around day / night was fixed in a recent update. Works fine on my iOS 7 iphone 4S, and older versions have worked fine on my iPads, but mostly I use it on the iPhone, so your milage may vary. Biggest feature that is lacking is an easy way to sync via the cloud across my devices (like I can do with the the Kindle app and actual Kindles). I wish there were more updates, but other than most recent one around iOS 7, it appears the developer has largely moved on to other works.

Love this app, but

Update: More than a year later, I still cant create new folders to sort my documents to. I really, really love this app - the configuration options are much better than most ereader-type programs out there, but I really do wish I could sort all the stories Ive saved. With IO7, I cant create new folders (using an ipad) to sort my documents. I click Move-->New Folder then it asks me to select a parent folder, which I do, and then it prompts me to put in the name of the new folder. However, there is no place to type it in, and my keyboard does not come up. So I have to cancel.
