Tomes App Reviews

Hard to use

For the Ipad, the epub books are displayed well, but the sorting the books into different folders once downloaded just keeps crashing. I cant create a new folder. Every time I pick a parent directory to put the new folder in it closes. Ive been using Calibre to load the books into the device, but you have to chose each book individually. Theres no "Download All" option. Calibre is a great program, and Id like to see a better inferface between them. But until the create a new folder problem is fixed, Im stuck with one.

Stinko !

I fear that if I used the most descriptive words possible, Apple would be forced to delete this review, so Ill do my best. How about words like: stink, junk, waste of every resource you might apply to it (I know more than one word).

Slow and Buggy

Will not download my kindle books, thought it would be nice to to have auto scroll on iPhone because the screen is so small. Also, the feedbooks library is molasses sllllloooowwwww..... Not sure if the price is worth it. Please please work the bugs out.

Version 2.3.3 doesnt work for me

I have updated to the new version twice on my ipad and both times I ended up with blank screens on all the pages. I cant read any of the books that I have installed. As a result I had to delete the app and return to the previous version that I still had on my laptop. Of course that means that I have to reinstall all my books again. I dont plan to attempt the upgrade again on my iPad. I am reluctant to try the update on my iPhone for fear that this will happen again..

Pretty okay

Bookshelf mostly meets my needs. The new version. 2.3.3 does not show any lists anymore and I cannot open any books. I am on iPhone iOS 3.1.3.

Junk

Reads chm files? No it doesnt, not at all. Anyone who purchased this should get a refund, this software is crap and shouldnt have made it through the approval process. Crashes all of the time and wont open files it supposedly "supports"; save your money, DO NOT PURCHASE THIS APP!

Best Ive used on a phone!

I love this app. Lots of characters onscreen means less flipping of pages. Download books without syncing. Rotation of text is awesome on the 3G (all OS 3.xx) and 3Gs (OS 4.0) iphones for a longer line and easier reading/scanning of text. Ive tried a few others but they just dont work as well for me. This app on an iphone will let you purchase (with Safari) and download without a computer which is great in an airport or any other time when not at home. Thank you for making it easier to take my books with me!

Crashes with iOS4

Used to be my favorite reader, smoothest scrolling of all readers. Easily transfer any txt docs for reading over BonJour. But w iOS4 its now worthless.

Dissapointing and buggy

I bought this app mainly to read plucker files and chm files from Microsoft tech.net. To date it has not been able to read a single chm file successfully. On top of that the file management is cumbersome. I could get around all of the other problems tho, if it could simply read and display chm files, which it claims to, and does not. This is not even listed as a bug, and several posts in the support forum have gone unanswered. I took the plunge and purchased this, and it is pretty much useless to me, which is a shame, because now I have to go and buy another app to read chm, files.

Same crashing with epub books

Having the same crashing back to springboard after it displays the cover on epub formatted books on an iPad. Really wish this problem was corrected because I WANT this app to work. The ShelfServer and the ability to make some titles invisible were two things I was looking for in an ebook reader. As it stands, this app is worthless.

Buggy and confusing

Well, I got this app to be able reading fb2-files. After several days, it is still a mistery for me whether or not this can be accomplished with BookShelf. Controls are rather confusing and sometimes the application just does not respond to any of tappings! It is not easy to find things you downloaded, etc. Besides, the app likes to crash on you right after you added 30-40 books in download. You will find very quickly that once this happens, everything you added but did not download went to the sink at once. The same will happen if you simply close the app before all downloads are finished. Would I recommend BookShelf? Most likely, NO. The free iBooks is much more stable and more predictable.

I want my money back! For everyone else pass on this one

A few bugs, but it does what I need it to

Stanza has a cleaner design and better organization of e-books, but I find that I use BookShelf more than Stanza. BookShelf has two features I really need that are missing from Stanza: it reads HTML e-books and it offers auto-scroll. For me, that makes it worth putting up with the apps occasional quirks and limitations.

Deleted it

After 15 minutes of trying to open the book I downloaded I couldnt even get to the first page. Deleted it off my iPod touch.

Buggy, cuts off book text

I started using one of the original versions of this, and it was great. The developer was responsive and there were relatively few bugs. As more versions with new features got introduced, so have more bugs. The final straw for me was that the last page or so if every chapter in every book is now being cut off. Multiple users have reported this in the support forum and there has been absolutely no response from the developer. I have switched to stanza. The book navigation is not ideal, but other than that it is a great app.

Book downloads still completely unreliable.

In order to effectively use bookshelf you need to run the "ShelfServer" on your main PC. In concept this is great, as its intended to provide a way to download all of your books easily and regardless of format. In practice however its a complete exercise in frustration and the developer has yet to acknowledge any problems in spite of forum posts to the contrary. I cannot recommend Tomes (formerly BookShelf) to anyone until these problems are fixed. Dont waste your money as youll have nothing but frustration trying to get this thing past step one, getting your books onto your device.

I want my money back

The worst reader

Dont use this app for iPhones

I bought Tomes because one of the e-book publishers listed it on their website as what to use for it iPhones. The book that I tried reading had wierd plot transitions from chapter to chapter...turns out that was because text was missing. The same book read just fine on iBooks. I suggest trying iBooks first, before trying this application. BTW, Tomes requires downloading three different apps. from 3 different palces to get it to work..I was astonished after the install that it actually displayed the book....but then, of course, only parts of it... The e-book publishers support guy said they are likely to take the recommendation off their website, because theyve had a number of complaints about this app.

Dont waste Your Money

A complete ripoff. If you have problems, dont write tech support. I had a problem downloading and asked for help. Still waiting, but they sure banked my money in a hurry.

file type support incorrect -

I purchased this app solely to read HTML files with images. Files generated from MS Office do not seem to be supported, despite their claim. I will investigate further, but so far this is a bust.
